We got a call in 2008 from a livestock rescue in MT about a miniature donkey. He was 4 and had already had 4 homes. Nobody wanted him and could we possibly take him?
We said yes and our rabbit rescue friends (rabbitron.com) set off to transport him for us. When they arrived here we could not believe the tiny donkey in the back of their truck! I had never seen such a tiny donkey.
We named him Jessie James and from the first moment he fit right in with all our full sized long ears. He had obviously been loved at one time but he had not been cared for and his hooves were terribly overgrown and his fur was awful. He was way too thin, his backbone protruding.
It took almost 2 years to get his weight where it should be and his fur grew in thick and luxurious. He is adorable and thinks all the jennies are his harem. When we have carrot or apple treats Jessie is usually second in line and as soon as he has gotten his snack he races to the end of the line as if he has not yet received his and I always give him one more. He thinks he is quite clever.
Every donkey has such a different personality. It is a beautiful thing to watch each donkey come fully into theirs once they are safe here.
